How to Pay in China with Alipay & WeChat (2026 Guide)

The old warning that "you need cash everywhere in China" died years ago. In 2026, almost everything accepts Alipay or WeChat Pay from a foreign Visa, Mastercard, Amex, JCB or Discover card — from a ¥3 street-food skewer to a ¥2,000 dinner. Set it up before you land and you can leave the wads of dollars at home. This is the exact setup, the real limits, and the points where it still goes wrong.

1. The 10-minute setup (do this at home, not at the airport)

Download Alipay (look for "Alipay" / "Tour Pass" features) or WeChat (which includes WeChat Pay). On first launch, choose English. In Alipay, tap the camera / "Scan" area and you will be prompted to "Link a card for foreign users" — enter your Visa or Mastercard number, expiry, CVV, and your passport details for real-name verification. WeChat works the same way: Me → Services → Wallet → Cards → "Add a card". A tiny ¥1–2 pre-authorisation is often charged and refunded within days.

The real-name step is not optional: China requires every payment account to be tied to a verified identity. Have your passport photo handy, and use the same name spelling as on your card and passport — a mismatch is the #1 reason cards get rejected at this stage. It usually approves within minutes; on a handful of banks it takes a day.

Which app should you pick? Honestly, either works. Alipay has a slightly smoother foreign-user flow and is accepted in a few more tourist cities; WeChat Pay wins when you join a WeChat group with your hotel or tour guide, because splitting a dinner bill inside a chat is magical. Install both — they take five minutes each, and having two payment apps means if one card gets declined you instantly have a backup.

Switch the app language to English in Settings before you link the card — Alipay and WeChat both default to Chinese on a China-region install, and the card-linking screen is much friendlier in English. You can change it any time in the profile settings. Do this at home on fast Wi-Fi, not standing in a jet-lagged airport queue.

2. The limits, in plain numbers (2026)

After central-bank guidance, Alipay and WeChat raised foreign-card limits: up to about US$5,000 per single transaction and roughly US$50,000 per year across your linked cards. In practice that means you can charge almost any hotel, restaurant or shopping spree on one card without hitting a wall. Day-to-day small purchases of ¥10–200 fly through instantly. Confirm the exact cap inside your app, as it changes without notice.

One quirk: very small payments (under about ¥100) often run through a no-password quick-pay mode — the moment you confirm, the money leaves. Double-check the amount the vendor typed before you tap, because a few street vendors have been known to enter ¥12 instead of ¥1. For anything over ¥200, the app asks for your passcode or fingerprint, so mistakes get caught. Refunds from a declined or wrong charge go back to the same card in a few days.

3. Where QR code payment actually works

Everywhere you will be as a tourist: department stores and chain malls, Starbucks and KFC, the big attraction ticket gates, taxis and Didi rides, the metro ticket machines in most cities, convenience stores (FamilyMart, Lawson, 7-Eleven), and street-food stalls that display a little Alipay or WeChat QR on the counter. You scan their code, enter the amount, done — no cash, no change, no awkward "sorry we don't take cards".

For taxis, the smoothest flow is to book and pay through the Didi app itself — the fare is charged to your linked card automatically at trip end, so you never fumble with the driver's QR or argue about change. If you hail a taxi on the street, the dashboard has a printed QR; the driver tells you the amount, you scan, and show the green "paid" screen on the way out. Cash-only taxi drivers do still exist, especially outside major cities — hand over a rounded note and they will find change.

The metro in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen even lets you add a transit card inside Alipay/WeChat and tap your phone at the gate — no ticket machine queue. Long-distance trains and domestic flights can also be paid through the apps' booking partners.

Two directions of scanning, so you don't freeze at the counter. When the merchant shows you a printed QR: tap "Scan" in the app, point the camera, type the amount the vendor says, confirm. When you are asked to show a code: tap "Pay" to bring up your own barcode, and the shop scans it. In both cases your home currency is converted automatically at a fair market rate — you never need to mentally convert yuan.

4. Where it fails, and the cash safety net

A few honest failure points. Some cards get declined — small US credit unions and prepaid cards are the usual victims; bring two different networks (one Visa, one Mastercard). Very small stalls in old-town alleys may only take cash or their own local QR. Refunds to your foreign card take 3–15 working days — don't panic if a hotel deposit takes a week to come back. And hotel deposits are often still taken on a real credit card pre-authorisation, so keep one physical card in your pocket.

As for cash exchange: do not change your whole budget at home. The airport arrival hall has Bank of China and exchange counters with reasonable rates, and ATMs in major cities still accept foreign cards (Visa/Mastercard) for withdrawals. ¥600–1,000 in your pocket covers the first day; everything after that goes through the apps. And tipping? You almost never need it — no tips at restaurants, taxis or for the QR payments themselves.

5. The order I give every first-timer

At home before departure: (1) install Alipay and WeChat, (2) link one Visa and one Mastercard, finish real-name verification, (3) make a ¥1 test payment to confirm it works, (4) exchange ¥600–1,000 in cash at home or on arrival for the first day. On landing: pay airport metro by QR, use your apps everywhere for 10 days, and only touch cash at the odd grandma stall. Keep one physical credit card purely for hotel deposits and emergencies.

If the worst happens and both apps reject both cards, you still have three lifelines: the ¥1,000 in cash, your physical credit card at any international-chain hotel or big mall, and a bank ATM that accepts foreign cards. Statistically it almost never comes to that, but knowing you have a backup makes the whole QR-code transition feel safe rather than stressful.

At the end of your trip, any leftover yuan is easiest to spend at the departure airport — convenience stores, bookshops and the last snack run take QR or cash, and you will not get a great rate changing yuan back to dollars. Your Alipay/WeChat balance (if you topped one up) cannot be refunded to a foreign card, so deliberately spend your last cash on the final evening's dinner rather than hoarding it. On the plane home, your card statements will show clean USD conversions with no hidden foreign-transaction fees worth worrying about.

Bottom line

Set up Alipay or WeChat with a foreign card before you fly, and China becomes as cashless as any major city — a street-food vendor in Chengdu will take your Visa faster than a cafe in Berlin. Keep a little yuan in cash and one physical card for deposits, and money will be the least of your worries on the whole trip.
