50 Countries. 30 Days. No Visa. — The 2026 China Visa-Free Guide

Last month I stood behind a French couple at Shanghai Pudong. They handed over two passports, and the officer stamped, smiled, and waved them through in about three minutes. No interview. No forms. The woman turned to me and said, in English: "I still don't believe this is real." It is real — and it keeps getting bigger. In 2026, 50 countries get visa-free entry to mainland China for up to 30 days. This guide is the full list, the expiry dates most websites skip, and what to carry so the three minutes at the border actually go smoothly.

1. The 50 countries (the full list)

Here is the complete list, straight from the National Immigration Administration (updated February 2026). If your passport is from any of these, you qualify for up to 30 days:

Europe (35): France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Ireland, Hungary, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Poland, Slovenia, Portugal, Greece, Cyprus, Slovakia, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Andorra, Monaco, Liechtenstein, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Malta, Estonia, Latvia, Russia, Sweden, United Kingdom.

Oceania (2): Australia, New Zealand. Asia (7): Brunei, South Korea, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain. The Americas (6): Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Uruguay, Canada.

Notice who is not on it: the United States, Singapore, Malaysia and the UAE. If that is you, don't panic — check the 240-hour transit rule below, or simply get an L tourist visa. And if your country was added recently, double-check the official list before booking, because this list has grown almost every year since 2023.

2. The expiry dates nobody reads

This is the part that will bite you if you plan a 2027 trip. The visa-free scheme is not permanent for everyone:

In practice, China has extended this scheme repeatedly since 2023 — most recently in August 2026 — so the odds of renewal are good. But "good odds" is not a guarantee. If your trip is in 2027, check the National Immigration Administration website before you book flights, and if the policy has lapsed for your country, the L tourist visa is the fallback.

3. How the 30 days actually work

Three rules matter, and people get them wrong all the time:

1. The clock starts the day after you arrive. Arrive on Monday, and your 30 days run from Tuesday 00:00 — you effectively get 31 calendar days in the country. The border officer told me this is the single most common misunderstanding, so plan the outbound flight with that extra day in mind.

2. You can re-enter again and again. There is currently no limit on the number of entries, no minimum gap between trips, and no cap on total visa-free days in a year. Fly home, come back two weeks later, get another 30 days. For now, that is completely legal — just don't abuse it for work.

3. No prior declaration, any port, any departure country. You do not need to notify any embassy or consulate. You can fly from anywhere outside China, not just your home country. And it works at all open sea, land and air ports — land borders included, which is why the train from Hanoi or Hong Kong also works.

One more thing: the allowed purposes are business, tourism, family visits, exchanges and transit. Sports events, conferences and study tours under 30 days count too. Work, study and journalism do not — those still need the proper visa, and border officers do check.

4. Visa-free vs 240-hour transit vs an L visa

China runs three doors at once in 2026, and travellers mix them up constantly. Here is the one table you need:

How to choose: if you are flying from Europe to, say, Thailand and China is a stopover, the 240-hour transit gives you 10 days and needs no decision at all. If you are coming for China and staying up to 30 days, use the unilateral visa-free scheme above. If your trip is longer than 30 days, or your passport is not on either list, apply for the L visa about two weeks before you fly — it costs a few hundred yuan and is straightforward at any Chinese consulate.

5. What to carry at the border

Three things. First, your passport with at least six months of validity — officers have turned people around for less. Second, a printed copy or phone screenshot of your return or onward ticket. Third, the name and address of your first hotel. Chinese hotels register foreign guests automatically when you check in. If you are staying in an apartment or a friend's flat, you must register at the local police station within 24 hours of arrival — hotels do it for you, apartments don't.

And keep the phone charged. At most major airports you'll want to show a booking confirmation, pull up a hotel address, and possibly pay for a taxi with your phone — the WeChat Pay or Alipay registration takes ten minutes at the airport and saves you from carrying cash.

6. What a 30-day trip actually looks like

Thirty days is a real trip, not a whistle-stop. The classic first-timer loop: Beijing (Great Wall, Forbidden City, hutongs) → Xi'an (Terracotta Army, Muslim Quarter street food) → Chengdu (giant pandas, hotpot) → Shanghai (the Bund at sunset, below). Add Guilin and Yangshuo if you want the karst-mountain scenery everyone posts on Instagram — it sits neatly between Xi'an and Shanghai on the map.

Budget-wise, a comfortable 30-day trip works out around ¥12,000–18,000 per person (about US$1,700–2,500), not counting international flights: mid-range hotels at ¥250–400 a night, long-distance trains at ¥500–800 per leg in second class, meals at ¥40–80 a day if you eat like locals, and attraction tickets — the Great Wall cable car, Terracotta Army, panda base — that add up to roughly ¥1,500 across the trip. 7. The mistakes that cost people money

Overstaying. The fine starts around ¥500 per day and can reach ¥10,000, and repeat offenders can be banned from re-entering for years. If your plan is 28 nights, book the outbound for day 30, not day 31. The extra day is free; the fine is not.

Using visa-free for work. Teaching, freelancing, even a paid photography gig without the right visa can mean a fine, deportation and a blacklist entry. It is not worth it.

Hoping the passport will "make it." If your passport expires within six months, many airlines won't even let you board. Renew first, then book.

Treating Hong Kong as a loophole to reset the clock. Technically, every arrival from abroad — Hong Kong included — restarts your 30 days. But border officers see serial re-entries and start asking questions. For a stay longer than 30 days, get the L visa instead.

Bottom line

In 2026, half the world's well-travelled passports simply book a flight to China and walk in for a month. No visa interview, no embassy run, no photo booth. Check that your country is on the 50-list, keep six months on your passport, carry a return ticket, and count your 30 days from the day after you land.
