Guilin vs Yangshuo: Which One Should You Base In?

Short answer: stay in Yangshuo for the scenery, stay in Guilin for transport. Guilin is the city with the airport and high-speed rail; Yangshuo is the dreamy river valley of karst peaks, bamboo rafts and backpacker bars. Most visitors are better off basing in Yangshuo and using Guilin purely as the arrival hub — but it depends how much time you have and what you want. Here's the honest trade-off.

Guilin itself is a normal city; the draw is a handful of signature sights. Elephant Trunk Hill — the city logo, an islanded hill that looks like an elephant drinking — has been free to enter since 2022 (just scan to reserve). Reed Flute Cave is a floodlit limestone grotto, about ¥81–90 including a guide — kitschy but genuinely impressive. The standout is the Two Rivers & Four Lakes night cruise (about ¥210–218), where you glide past lit pagodas and bridges; though honestly, strolling the lakeside promenades is free and most of the view is the same.

Yangshuo is where the karst peaks wrap around you. The must-do is the Yulong River bamboo-raft drift — quiet, man-propelled rafts that slip over tiny weirs between green peaks. It's priced per raft (two people), not per person: the short Shuiedi–Gongnong Bridge run is about ¥200 for 40–50 minutes, while the longer Jima–Gongnong or Jinlong Bridge–Jiuxian stretch is about ¥320 for 90 minutes. Book online the night before (tickets release at 20:00); don't take rafts from street touts.

After the raft, cycle the Ten-Mile Gallery (Shili Huatang) — a flat, scenic road through peak-studded farmland, bike rental about ¥20–40 a day. In the evening, West Street is the buzzing pedestrian strip of bars, cafés and the famous "Impression Sanjie Liu" light show on the river (optional, around ¥230–290 for tickets).

Short on time (1–2 days): base in Guilin, treat Yangshuo as a day trip via the Li River cruise or a fast transfer — you see the icon without unpacking twice. Leisure travellers (3+ days): base in Yangshuo. That's where the raft, the cycling and the slow peak views live; dip back to Guilin once for the cave and the night cruise. Photographers: unequivocally Yangshuo — the Yulong River banks and the Xingping stretch (the ¥20-note view) are your backdrop, and you'll want early mornings, which you can't do from Guilin.

One trap to flag: Yulong raft assistants sometimes press travellers for tips or "photo" fees. The official fare already covers the drift; tipping is optional and never mandatory. And ignore touts at both bus stations selling "cheap all-in tours" — they're commission shopping runs.

Getting in: Guilin Liangjiang Airport (KWL) has direct flights from most Chinese hubs and a few international routes; the high-speed rail station (Guilin North) connects to Guangzhou in about 2.5 hours. Note that the "Yangshuo" high-speed station is actually in a separate town about 40 minutes' bus ride from Yangshuo's West Street — don't assume you're stepping out into the scenery. Most visitors fly/train into Guilin and transfer south, which is why Guilin works so well as an arrival hub even if you don't sleep there.

Food is cheap and good. Guilin rice noodles (Guilin mifen) are the city's breakfast signature — a bowl costs ¥8–15 at any busy street stall, and the pickled-chilli-and-peanut topping is the whole point. In Yangshuo, expect beer fish (pijiu yu) — freshwater fish stewed with local beer and chillies — and farmer's stir-fries, but West Street restaurants are calibrated for tourists; a short walk off the strip gets you the same food half the price. Budget about ¥40–70 per person for a local meal.

Where to sleep: in Guilin, stay near the Two Rivers & Four Lakes waterfront or the central bus station for easy transfers. In Yangshuo, the West Street area is lively but noisy; the quieter boutique options sit along the river or out in the peak-studded countryside — worth the extra ¥100–200 for the morning view. Hotel prices roughly double during Chinese holiday weeks, so book those months early or avoid them entirely.

Beyond the raft and the cycle, Yangshuo has Moon Hill (a natural arch you can climb 800 steps to) and the Yulong River itself for riverside walks — you don't need to pay for a raft to enjoy it; the trail alongside is free and gorgeous. Guilin side, if you have an extra half day, Silver Cave or the Yaoshan cable car add greenery. Best overall weather is April–October; winter is quiet and cheap but the river can run low.

The Impression Sanjie Liu evening show — a 70-minute outdoor light-and-performance production staged on the Li River itself, with karst peaks as the backdrop — divides travellers. It's expensive (¥230–290) and the plot is thin, but the scale (hundreds of performers on bamboo rafts, lit peaks) is genuinely memorable. Book the cheap B-section seats; the view is the same, you're just further back. Skip it if you've seen large outdoor shows before.

Getting around Yangshuo itself is easy: walk West Street, then rent an e-bike (~¥60–100/day) to reach the raft piers and Moon Hill. The countryside is flat and the roads are quiet. In peak season, arrive at the raft pier by 09:00 — the day's tickets are limited and the afternoon drifts get hot. Safety note: bamboo rafts have a strict height/age rule for small children, and you'll get your feet wet — leave valuables in the hotel safe, not in a plastic bag on the raft.

One last decision helper: if you only have two nights total, spend both in Yangshuo and treat Guilin as a transit point — the Elephant Trunk Hill photo takes 40 minutes on your way through. If you have four nights or more, split them: two in Guilin (cave, night cruise, a relaxed city evening) and two in Yangshuo (raft, cycle, West Street). The mistake most first-timers make is staying in Guilin because it "sounds" like the city, then driving an hour each way into the scenery every day — exhausting and unnecessary.

One more thing to know before you book: prices here are quoted in Chinese yuan and are 2026 on-the-ground ranges, not walk-up rack rates. Raft tickets, in particular, move in and out of official pricing every season — the figures above are the standard published fares, but if a tout quotes you dramatically less, it's either an unlicensed raft or a bait-and-switch. For almost everyone, Yangshuo is the soul of this region and Guilin is just the front door. Arrive in Guilin, transfer to Yangshuo, and spend your days on the river, the bike and the peaks — only paying for a night cruise or a cave if you want them.
