130 cm. 20 kg. 100 Wh. The three numbers that rule your China high-speed rail luggage

I watched a guy at Beijing South Station lose twenty minutes at security over a bag he'd carried on flights for years. Twenty-eight-inch hard case, brand new, wheels still shiny. The officer made him open it, measured the case against a frame, and told him politely but firmly: too big for the overhead, and there was no checked luggage on this train. He ended up sprinting back to the CRE counter — the railway's delivery service — to ship the case to Shanghai instead of riding with it. It took me exactly one trip after that to learn the three numbers every foreigner needs before they even book a ticket: 20 kg. 130 cm. 100 Wh.

1. The three numbers, exactly as the railway states them

China Railway's official English FAQ spells out the free carry-on allowance per passenger: 20 kg for adults, 10 kg for children (including ticket-free kids), 35 kg for diplomatic personnel. That's the total weight you can walk onto the train with — your suitcase plus your backpack plus that souvenir bag all count toward the same 20.

The size rule is the one that actually bites. On EMU / high-speed trains (G, C, D classes), every single piece must stay within 130 cm in total external dimensions — length + width + height added together. A standard 28-inch suitcase is usually around 155–160 cm total, which is why that guy got stopped. On older slower trains the limit is more generous (160 cm per piece, 200 cm for rod-shaped items like a fishing-rod tube), but the vast majority of tourist routes are EMU, so plan for 130. And no single item may exceed 20 kg even if your total is under.

Two useful exceptions: a foldable wheelchair travels free and doesn't count toward your allowance, and there is no strict per-bag limit on how many pieces you bring as long as the total weight and per-piece size hold. I've ridden with a 20-inch cabin case, a daypack and a shopping bag and nobody blinked. The trick is keeping every piece under 130 cm — two soft duffels beat one hard-shell monster every time.

Book your train with the allowance in mindSecond-class Beijing–Shanghai runs from about ¥553 (≈US$78); upgrade to first class if you're carrying the 20 kg limit.

2. Power banks, lighters, and the things that get you stopped

The confiscation list is shorter than an airport's, but the two items that catch travelers are the ones everyone now carries. Power banks and lithium batteries: one per battery, clearly marked, rated energy no more than 100 Wh — that's roughly 27,000 mAh. A 20,000 mAh bank you bought for your phone is fine. Two of them are also fine, as long as each is separately under 100 Wh and the markings are legible. An unmarked "travel charger" from a market stall is exactly what the officer will pull out.

Other practical rules from the official prohibited-and-restricted list: safety matches (max 2 small boxes) and ordinary lighters (max 2) are allowed in small quantities; electric scooters, self-balancing boards and electric bicycles are banned because their batteries exceed the limit (an electric wheelchair for a person with a disability is the exception); and the on-board power sockets are for phones, tablets and laptops only — plugging in a kettle or a fan will get you a visit from a train attendant, fast. Sharp knives, flammables and over-limit alcohol fall under the usual "don't even try" category.

3. Your bag is too big — now what?

Here's the part almost no guide explains: high-speed trains don't have checked luggage. There's no belt, no cargo hold, no "baggage allowance" you can buy. If your piece exceeds 130 cm or the 20 kg total, it isn't boarding with you, full stop. What saves you is the railway's own delivery network, CRE (中铁快运, China Railway Express).

Reference pricing straight from the 12306 service page: the standard CRE service runs about ¥23 first kg + ¥10 per additional kg, and a cheaper "special-offer" tier about ¥18 first kg + ¥6 per kg, with city-to-city variation. You can book through the CRE app or WeChat mini-program, or walk up to the CRE counter at the station (usually near the main entrance or by the ticket hall) before security. Count on an hour or two of buffer if you're shipping same-day — they weigh it, tag it, and it travels on a later train of the same or next day.

Three more honest options. Station storage: if you're just doing a day trip, luggage lockers or the station's consignment desk hold your bag for around ¥3 per piece per day after the free period — cheaper than hauling a big case through the Forbidden City. CRE "light travel" pickup (tested on major lines since 2026): a courier collects from your hotel and delivers to the platform or destination, priced at about ¥78 per piece up to 10 km, ¥88 up to 20 km, ¥98 up to 35 km. And the all-in fallback: ship it from the hotel itself — most front desks can call a courier for you, and domestic parcel delivery in China is fast, cheap and reliable for anything non-fragile.

4. Pets: the 2026 change that surprised everyone

If you're traveling with a dog or cat, here's the good news — and it's genuinely new. Since 8 April 2026, China Railway's upgraded "Pet Companion" service (爱宠行) lets cats and dogs travel on high-speed trains, either in the same carriage as you ("携宠出行") or shipped separately ("爱宠单独行"). The service covers 121 stations and 228 trains as of launch, and you book through the 12306 app's pet-transport section in advance.

Pricing is distance-based with a discount tier: Beijing–Shanghai costs ¥658 per pet at the standard rate, or ¥460 if you ride the same train as your pet, and every shipment includes basic insurance of ¥2,000. Compared with flying, where pets ride in cargo and cost a small fortune, this is a genuinely useful option for a long China trip. Two fine print notes: the pet must be in a compliant carrier with the required paperwork (vaccination and quarantine documents), and only certified guide dogs ride in the passenger cabin for free — the 12306 FAQ says to wait at security with the dog for inspection.

5. The packing checklist I now swear by

After that first near-disaster, this is what I actually do, and it has never failed since:

(1) Two soft bags instead of one hard case. A 26-inch duffel plus a daypack splits your weight and keeps every piece under 130 cm. If you must bring a hard case, keep it 24-inch or smaller. (2) Valuables and chargers on your body. Passport, cards, phone, the power bank under 100 Wh, and any camera go in your daypack that rides at your feet — never in a bag that might get shipped. (3) Put big bags at the end of the carriage. Every EMU has a luggage rack near the doors for oversized pieces; small items go on the overhead. Don't block the aisle, the conductor will make you move it. (4) Book the right seat. First-class rows have more foot room to tuck a case; business-class on long routes even has dedicated storage. The extra ¥100–200 buys a lot of peace of mind at 350 km/h. (5) Arrive 30–40 minutes early on any trip with a large bag. Security lines at big stations move fast, but the "measure your case" moment does not.

And if the whole "luggage + tickets + city transfers" choreography is starting to sound like work — it kind of is. This is the one place a private or group tour genuinely earns its money: your bags ride in the van or the tour bus while you walk through security with a daypack, your tickets and hotel transfers are already arranged, and on multi-day routes the vehicle follows the same itinerary so you never repack for a train platform. Compare it against what you'd spend on CRE shipping fees, taxi surcharges and a frazzled morning, and the all-in price starts looking reasonable.

Bottom line

China's high-speed rail is the best way to cross the country, but it rewards people who plan their bags like they plan their tickets. Keep every piece under 130 cm, stay under 20 kg total, keep power banks under 100 Wh, and know that CRE will ship whatever won't fit. Learn those three numbers and the guy losing twenty minutes at Beijing South security will never be you.
