Can you do Yunnan's two most famous old towns in four days and actually enjoy them? Yes — if you front-load Lijiang, take the short train to Dali, and resist the urge to pack in Shangri-La. The honest version: two nights in Lijiang (one old town, one snow mountain), then two nights in Dali (old town plus a lazy loop around Erhai Lake). Expect to spend roughly ¥900–1,400 per person for the four days once tickets, transport, food and two nights of mid-range lodging are counted — about $125–195 USD. The single biggest planning trap is the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain cable car, which sells out weeks ahead and cannot be bought on the morning.

1. How to arrange the four days

Day 1: arrive in Lijiang, ease into the Old Town at ~2,400 m and walk it slowly in the evening. Day 2: full-day Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, returning to Lijiang for the night. Day 3: morning train to Dali (under 2.5 hours), afternoon in Dali Old Town. Day 4: a half-day loop around Erhai Lake — cycling or a chartered car — through Xizhou and Shuanglang, then depart from Dali that evening or the next morning.

This order matters. Arriving at 2,400 m and immediately hiking a 4,500 m snow mountain is how people end up with a headache and a wasted day, so give your body the first night in Lijiang before the mountain. Dali is lower (about 2,000 m), so it's the gentle wind-down after the snow peak.

2. Lijiang Old Town: pay the fee, but sleep outside the crowds

Lijiang's Dayan Old Town is the postcard: canals, carved wooden facades, red lanterns. Technically there is an Old Town Maintenance Fee of ¥50, valid for 365 days and covering Dayan, Shuhe and Baisha. In practice enforcement is loose and travelers report mixed experiences — some are asked at minor attractions, many walk in freely. Treat it as a possible ¥50, not a gate that stops you, and always confirm the current rule with your hotel.

The smarter move for sleep is to stay one rung out in Shuhe or Baisha. Shuhe is quieter than Dayan, still pretty, and far cheaper per room; Baisha is even more local, with Naxi frescoes and no crush of souvenir shops. Dayan by night for dinner and lanterns, back to Shuhe/Baisha to actually sleep. Whatever you do, don't book a guesthouse deep inside the stone lanes and then drag a 25 kg suitcase over the cobblestones — cars cannot enter.

3. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain: the one thing to book early

This is the highlight, and also the trip's biggest logistics problem. You need three things: the mountain entrance ticket (¥100), the mandatory eco shuttle bus (¥20), and — if you want to stand on the glacier at the top — the Glacier Park "big" cable car (around ¥120–140 one way). Blue Moon Valley (the turquoise lakes everyone photographs) is included in the entrance fee and needs no extra ticket.

The big cable car is capacity-limited and releases slots about seven days ahead, usually at 20:00 through the official "Lijiang Tourism Group" mini-program. In peak season (July–August, National Day, winter holidays) it sells out within minutes. If you miss it, the lower Spruce Meadow cable car (¥40–60) still gives you a mountain day and glacier views without the summit. Buy the big-car slot before you lock in the rest of the trip.

Altitude is real. The cable car drops you around 4,506 m, with a boardwalk climbing to about 4,680 m. Most first-timers feel it: shortness of breath, a pounding head, wobbly legs. Move slowly, don't run up the stairs, drink water, and rent or buy an oxygen canister (¥20–60) at the base station before you ride up. If you've come from sea level the same morning, the Spruce Meadow option is the safer call.

4. Lijiang to Dali, and the Erhai loop

The train is the easy part. Frequent intercity trains link Lijiang and Dali in roughly 1 h 45 m to 2 h 20 m, second class about ¥80, first class around ¥127. Buy the morning train and you're in Dali Old Town by lunch. The old town itself is free to wander; the Three Pagodas outside town (¥75) are worth it only if you specifically want the classic photo.

Day four is Erhai Lake. A 130 km ecological corridor circles the lake — no private cars on the best stretch, which is exactly why it's lovely. You have three realistic options: rent an e-bike (¥50–80/day) for a couple of hours along the corridor, hire a charter car (¥300–500/day) for the full loop, or join a small "Jeep tour" that posts you along the shore for photos. Xizhou, with its Bai courtyard architecture and fresh xizhou baba pastry, and Shuanglang, perched on the east shore, are the two stops everyone wants.

Bargain the e-bike battery before you rent — a dead battery mid-corridor means a long push back. And watch the wind on the open east shore in the afternoon; it's glorious for photos but cuts the cycling short in winter.

6. Traps to skip

Dragging luggage into the old town. Cars can't reach the inns on the deep stone lanes. Stay at the edge or arrange hotel pickup from the main entrance. Street-side "cheap charter" touts. The drivers who grab you at the train station are the same ones who then pressure you into paid photo stops and "hidden temples." Book the Erhai loop through an app or your guesthouse instead. Missing the big cable car window. This is the one failure that ruins a whole day — set a phone reminder for the release time and buy the slot the day it opens.

Also: the sun at 2,400 m is stronger than it feels. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat even on an overcast day, and drink more water than you think you need — altitude and dry air both dehydrate quietly.

7. Best time to go, and what to actually eat

The sweet spot is March–April and September–October: clear skies for the snow mountain, mild temperatures, and cheaper rooms. Summer (June–August) is green and beautiful but also rainy and peak-priced, and the big cable car is hardest to grab. Winter (December–February) is cold and crisp, with the snow peak at its most dramatic — but Erhai's afternoon wind cuts the cycling short. Avoid the first week of October (National Day), when both old towns are effectively one long queue.

On food, keep it local and cheap. In Lijiang look for naxi barbecued ribs and a hot clay pot of naxi fish; in Dali, the crossing-bridge noodles at a roadside stall and a paper-wrapped xizhou baba fresh from the griddle are better than any sit-down restaurant aimed at tourists. Skip the "traditional Naxi performance dinner" combos sold near the old-town gate — you pay restaurant prices for a mediocre show and average food. Street food and small eateries behind the main street win on both taste and price.
