¥26 Trains Between 3 Cities: My 5-Day Shanghai–Hangzhou–Suzhou Loop

The woman at the Shanghai Hongqiao ticket counter looked at my passport, then at the screen, then back at me, and said in perfect English: "You know this train stops in Suzhou in 23 minutes, right?" I did not know. I had budgeted half a day for the journey. That single sentence rearranged my whole trip — and it's the reason this 5-day loop between Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou is now my favourite first-timer route in China. Three cities, two rail legs, one of them costing less than a pizza: ¥26–41 second class, 23–38 minutes. Here's the whole thing with 2026 prices, what to book ahead, and the two things I'd do differently.

1. Why this loop works

The three cities sit on a triangle where no leg is more than about an hour by rail. Shanghai is the big-money skyline and the colonial riverside; Suzhou is 2,500-year-old canal town with the best classical gardens in China; Hangzhou is West Lake, the tea hills and the prettiest lakefront in the country. You get three completely different Chinas in five days, and you never check a bag more than once. The trains run every few minutes on most pairs, and second class is clean, fast and absurdly cheap. My one structural advice: do Shanghai → Suzhou → Hangzhou, not the reverse, so the trip gets calmer as it goes and you end at the lake, not the airport.

2. Day 1 — Shanghai: the Bund at night, ¥40 gardens by day

Land at Pudong or Hongqiao, then base yourself anywhere on Metro lines 2 or 10 — both feed the Bund and the old town directly. My day: Yuyuan Garden (豫园) first, ¥40 adult in peak season (April 1–June 30 and September 1–November 30; it drops to ¥30 in the off-season), open 9:00–16:30, an hour of Ming-dynasty rockeries and carp ponds two minutes from the lantern-bedecked bazaar outside. Then the Bund at dusk: walk the river promenade from the Peace Hotel toward the ferry, watch the Pudong towers switch on, and pay the ¥2 ferry across to get the skyline from the water. Eat somewhere with a queue — in Shanghai the queue is the review.

3. Day 2 — Shanghai → Suzhou: a ¥26 train and the ¥80 garden

From Hongqiao, G-series trains reach Suzhou in 23–38 minutes, second class ¥26–41 — the ¥26 fares are the local D-and-G combinations on the shorter route, and you can usually grab a seat at 30–40 yuan. Don't overthink which station: Suzhou Railway Station is the one that lands you downtown. Drop the bag, then go straight to the Humble Administrator's Garden (拙政园): ¥80 in peak season (April, May, July–October), ¥70 off-season, open from 7:30 (and from 6:45 on summer dates like 19 June–7 October 2026), gates close 17:30. This is the garden every other garden in China copies — 500-year-old water views, borrowed scenery, rockeries you can get lost in for two hours. Book it ahead: it's real-name, timed-entry, and weekend slots sell out one to three days early.

4. Day 3 — Suzhou slow: canals, a free museum, and what to skip

Suzhou rewards a second morning. Walk the old town's back canals around Pingjiang Road before the tour groups arrive, then line up (free, but reserve a slot online) for Suzhou Museum, designed by I.M. Pei — the building is as good as the collection, and it's free with a timed booking. Skip the "boat ride" hawkers at the main bridges; the ¥50–80 canal boat is a lottery. Instead, do what locals do: buy a 5-yuan steamed bun, sit by the water, and let the afternoon disappear. In the late afternoon take one more garden if you're a completist — the Lion Grove is ¥40 and ten minutes' walk from the Humble Administrator's Garden — then get a good night's sleep for the morning train.

5. Day 4 — Suzhou → Hangzhou: under an hour, then a free lake

Here's the leg most guides get wrong. From Suzhou South station (苏州南), G/C trains to Hangzhou West run 43–57 minutes, second class ¥65–74 — that's the sweet spot. (From Suzhou Railway Station the run to Hangzhou East is longer and pricier.) Then Hangzhou gives you the rarest thing in Chinese travel: a world-class lake that costs nothing. West Lake has been free since 2003, the first ticket-free 5A scenic area in the country — you just walk onto the causeways. And since 1 December 2025 the Lingyin–Feilaifeng scenic area (Lingyin Temple included) is free too, with real-name, timed reservations. Two of the biggest-ticket sights in eastern China now cost ¥0. Book the reservation, not the ticket.

6. Day 5 — Hangzhou: one loop, one teahouse, one last look

Give West Lake a full morning: start at Broken Bridge, walk or cycle the Su Causeway, ferry across to the islands for the three pagodas, and finish at Longjing village where the tea terraces roll up the hill. A pot of Longjing at a village teahouse costs ¥30–60 and comes with a view that justifies the whole trip. If your flight leaves from Shanghai, add a same-day train back (about an hour, book the afternoon one) and watch the skyline disappear behind you. This is the day to not rush — the airport will still be there.

7. The 2026 budget, item by item

8. Self-booked vs group tour — the honest math

My five days, self-booked, one person: trains roughly ¥95–115, gardens and ferries about ¥140, four nights split-shared ¥500–1,000, food and incidentals ¥400–700 — the whole loop lands around ¥1,200–2,000 per person in 2026 prices. Now the counter-offer: a 5-day private tour covering Shanghai–Suzhou–Hangzhou with an English-speaking guide, driver and hotels typically runs ¥3,000–6,000. Is it worth it? For three kinds of people, yes: first-timers who don't want to fight Chinese-language timed-entry booking apps; anyone who wants the garden tickets, the Lingyin reservation and the car all handled so they never queue; and travellers with limited days who'd rather spend them looking at lakes than at screens. For everyone else, honestly — this is the easiest loop in China to book yourself, and the gap between ¥1,200 and ¥3,000-plus is real money. But if the logistics are what's stopping you from coming at all, take the tour and don't feel guilty about it.

9. The traps I almost walked into

Three, in order of how much they'd have cost me. One: booking the wrong Suzhou station. Suzhou has several rail stations; the downtown one is Suzhou Railway Station, and the cheap fast Hangzhou leg leaves from Suzhou South — check which one your hotel is near before you book the ticket. Two: assuming garden tickets are walk-up. The Humble Administrator's Garden is real-name, timed-entry and passport-linked; weekend slots sell out days ahead. Same for Lingyin since it went free — the reservation is the gate. Three: rushing the loop into two days. It's technically possible to do all three cities in a long weekend. It would also be a blur of platforms and selfies. Five days is the number that lets Shanghai be loud, Suzhou be slow and Hangzhou be free — and it's the version I'd book again without hesitating.

Bottom line

This is the loop I send friends on before they've even told me where they're going. A ¥26–41 train gets you from Shanghai's skyline to Suzhou's canals in 23–38 minutes; ¥65–74 gets you from Suzhou to a free West Lake in under an hour; ¥80 buys the garden that invented Chinese garden design; and Hangzhou's two biggest sights cost nothing since 2003 and since December 2025. Five days, three Chinas, roughly ¥1,200–2,000 booked yourself — or ¥3,000–6,000 with every queue and reservation handled. Book the garden before you book the train, check your station, and end at the lake.
