Terracotta Army Day Tour from Xi'an

The Terracotta Army is Xi'an's must-see, but getting there trips up first-timers more than the site itself does. It's 40 minutes east in Lintong, there are official and fake buses leaving from the same street, and the ticket is useless without someone to explain what you're looking at. The good news: a smooth day costs about ¥250–450 per person (roughly $35–60 USD) whether you do it yourself or book a small group. Read this once and you'll avoid the two scams that catch almost every new arrival.

Ticket facts first. Entry to the Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum Museum is ¥120 in peak season (16 March–15 November) and ¥65 off-season, covering Pits 1, 2 and 3 plus the bronze chariots. It's sold through the museum's official website and WeChat account — the museum states plainly that it has not authorised any third-party reseller. Add the optional ¥15 sightseeing cart if you don't want the 10-minute walk from the gate to Pit 1. Ticket checks run 8:30–17:00.

What you'll actually see, in order. Start at Pit 1, the huge 200-metre hall where thousands of armoured warriors line up in formation — this is the photo that stopped the world in 1974, and it's bigger in person than on screen. Then Pit 2, which reopened fresh in October 2026 after a half-year upgrade and holds the high-status generals, archers and cavalry in smaller, more detailed groups. Finish at Pit 3, the small command post. The bronze chariot hall, near the exit, is easy to skip but worth 10 minutes — the intricate bronze horses are stunning. Walk the whole thing slowly; rushing the most famous archaeological site on Earth is the one real mistake.

1. DIY or a small group — which is for you?

Do it yourself if you're comfortable on your own, want to set your own pace, and are two or more people to split a taxi. It's the cheapest option and completely doable. Book a small group if you'd rather not navigate the bus station chaos, want the entrance ticket and an English guide handled for you, or are travelling alone. A reputable group tour that includes transport + entrance + guide runs about ¥250–400 per person in 2026 — only slightly more than DIY once you split a car and hire a guide, and far less stressful.

2. How to get there yourself

The real bus is the 游5 (306) line, which leaves from the official bus station just east of Xi'an Railway Station It costs about ¥7 one way, takes roughly an hour, and drops you at the museum. The catch is that this exact street is also where the fakes operate — touts in uniform-like jackets wave you onto white vans that say "Tourist Bus" but aren't. Look for the actual green-and-yellow public bus and the queue, not someone calling you over.

By taxi or Didi is the easiest DIY route: about ¥100–150 each way for a car, door to door in 40–50 minutes. Split between two or three people it's excellent value, and you control the timing on the way back — important if you want to leave before the afternoon crowds. Just make sure the return ride is booked before you leave the museum, as taxis queue up and can be scarce at peak times.

3. Is half a day enough? And the guide question

Half a day is enough for the warriors themselves — three hours inside covers all three pits comfortably. It's not enough if you also want to add Huaqing Chi, which is a separate half-day. Aim to arrive at 8:30–9:30: the museum opens at 8:30, and the big tour groups start rolling in around 11. A morning visit means Pit 1's boardwalk is quiet when you take your photos.

Plan your return before you leave. If you arrived by bus, walk back to the same stop and queue — the 游5/306 runs all day. If you came by Didi, call your return car when you're finishing the bronze chariot hall, so it's waiting by the time you reach the gate. Aim to be back in central Xi'an by early afternoon: that leaves the rest of day two free for the City Wall bike ride and the Muslim Quarter, which is exactly how a relaxed Xi'an itinerary fits the warriors in without losing an evening. There's nothing to gain by lingering at the site past 1 p.m. — by then the pits are packed and the light for photos is gone.

Do get a guide — it changes everything. Without one you see thousands of similar statues; with one you learn that every face is unique, that the figures were brightly painted and burned in a fire, that they're arranged by rank and weapon, and that most of the tomb complex is still unexcavated. Options, best to worst: an officially licensed guide booked in advance through your hotel or a platform (~¥200–300 for the group); a shared guide you join at the entrance (¥50–100 each if you split with a few strangers); or the audio guide rental at the gate (cheapest, fine). Avoid anyone who offers you a "private tour" out of the car park — that's where the misinformation starts.

5. The two scams that catch everyone

Scam one — the fake "official" bus at the station. We keep coming back to it because it's universal. People in jackets by the station square tell you the real bus is gone, then sell you a ¥10–20 seat on a white van that stops at a jade factory and a "terracotta souvenir workshop" before dropping you off late. You pay more, lose two hours, and arrive at the busiest time. The real 游5/306 has a proper bus bay and a queue of locals — join that, ignore the rest.

Scam two — fake warriors and overpriced copies. Along the road to the site and in the car park, stalls sell "real terracotta antiques" or cheap warrior replicas. The real warriors never leave Lintong, and any loose "antique figure" on a street corner is worthless. Buy your replica from the museum gift shop if you want a souvenir — it's ¥30–80 and actually well made. Also budget time for the entry security and, in peak season, the queue into Pit 1 itself; arriving before 9:30 saves you most of it.

Eating near the site. Restaurants right by the museum gate cater to tour groups and are mediocre and pricey. Bring a sandwich or snacks from Xi'an in the morning, or wait and eat properly back in the city — a real roujiamo and bowl of biangbiang noodles near the Bell Tower will be both better and cheaper than anything within 500 metres of the car park. If you must eat on site, stick to the museum's own restaurant rather than the independent stalls that greet buses as they arrive.

Bottom line

You don't need a fancy tour to see the Terracotta Army — but you do need the real bus or a Didi, a booked official ticket, and a guide. Do it yourself for the cheapest, most flexible morning, or pay ¥250–400 for a small group that hands you the car, the ticket and the English narration in one go. Arrive before 9:30, ignore anyone who flags you down at the station, and you'll stand before the 2,200-year-old army with none of the confusion — just the wonder.
