¥280 a Day in a Painting: 3 Days in Jiuzhaigou at Peak Autumn

The first lake made me laugh out loud. Not because it was funny — because it looked fake, like someone had poured a bottle of liquid turquoise into a mountain bowl and then Photoshopped the reflections for good measure. I checked the water with my hand. Still blue. Then I walked ten minutes and found a second lake that was somehow bluer, ringed by trees on fire in orange and crimson. That's Jiuzhaigou in the last two weeks of October, when roughly 80% of the valley has turned, the daily cap is 41,000 visitors, and the entrance ticket plus bus costs a flat ¥280 (190 entry + 90 shuttle bus). I spent three days there. Here is exactly what it costs in 2026, and the one mistake I nearly made.

1. Why this exact fortnight

Jiuzhaigou's colour window is narrow and the locals are blunt about it. October 17 to November 5 is the golden period — roughly 80% of the maples and larches turned deep red and gold — and the two weeks from around October 25 to November 10 are called the "peak twenty days". After mid-November the leaves drop fast and the valley goes back to green and grey. There's a gradient you should know about: the low-altitude forests turn first, the higher ones about a week later, so mid-to-late October gives you both bands at once. And unlike a lot of famous autumn spots, this isn't a free-for-all: the park has been running a daily cap since July 2026 (41,000 people), tickets are real-name reservations tied to your passport, and on weekends the timed slots can sell out one to three days ahead. Book before you book the train.

2. Getting there: the 90-minute train that changed everything

Before August 2024 this trip meant an eight-to-ten-hour coach ride up a mountain road. Then the Sichuan–Qinghai railway opened its Zhenjiangguan–Huanglongjiuzhai section, and suddenly Chengdu East to Huanglongjiuzhai station is a 1h40m–2h30m bullet train, second class ¥130–151 (the 06:14 C5746 runs it in 1h39m at ¥130; most daytime trains sit at ¥143). The station is still 92 km from the park gate, but the official shuttle network runs buses timed to every train arrival: Huanglongjiuzhai station → Jiuzhaigou gate ¥51, about 2 hours; → Huanglong ¥28, buying through the "Jiulü Yuexing" mini-program or the station counter. Two hours on a shuttle with the valley climbing past your window is part of the experience, honestly. Do not rent a car unless you're a confident mountain driver — the road has hairpins and October can bring frost at altitude.

3. The ¥280 day, and why it's one day only

Here's the number most guides dance around: in the 2026 peak season (April 1 – mid-November) Jiuzhaigou costs ¥190 entrance + ¥90 shuttle bus = ¥280 per person per day, and the ticket is valid for that calendar day only. No two-day pass. The park enforces a strict "sleep outside the park" rule — there are no official in-park hotels for foreign visitors, and the unofficial village homestays that advertise "one ticket, two days" are not available to international guests. So plan it as a single long day: gate opens 7:30, the Y-shaped valley splits into the Shuzheng, Rize and Zechawa gullies, and the shuttle system funnels you between the big stops. The classic full loop: bus straight to Wuhuahai (Five-Flower Lake) while the morning light is still low, walk the boardwalk back past Pearl Shoal Falls, catch the bus up to Changhai (Long Lake) and walk down to Wucai Chi (Five-Color Pond), then end at Nuorilang Falls before the tour-bus surge hits. My single mistake: I tried to "save time" by skipping the Wucai Chi walkway. It's 800 m. Take the walkway.

4. Day 2 — Huanglong's terraces, a ¥250 side trip

An hour's shuttle away (¥28 from the rail station, or a morning trip from the gate) is Huanglong, a completely different species of beautiful: 3,000+ stacked calcium-carbonate pools in lime, jade and milky white, sitting at 3,100–3,600 m altitude. In the 2026 peak season (June 1 – December 15) the entry is ¥170, and the cable car up is ¥80 (¥40 down) — take the cable car. The walk down through the Five-Color Ponds is the payoff, and at that altitude the gentle descent is kinder than the climb. The park opens 8:00, last entry 16:00. Two honest warnings: the altitude is real — headaches start around 3,300 m if you're not used to it, so pace yourself and skip the running; and on a clear October morning it is genuinely cold, single digits, so the down jacket that felt ridiculous in Chengdu becomes your best friend here.

5. Where to sleep (and the price trap)

Everything outside the gate splits into two tiers. Pengfeng Village, the "at the gate" zone, is a 5–15-minute walk to the entrance: chain hotels roughly ¥350–600 a night in October, Tibetan-style guesthouses ¥450–700. Zhangzha Town, 3–5 km away, drops to ¥180–400 for clean local guesthouses, with a free shuttle or a ¥10–20 taxi to the gate. In high season the hotels genuinely need booking 7–15 days ahead — I watched a walk-in couple at the front desk of my guesthouse get told "nothing until the 28th". My advice: pay the premium for Pengfeng one night so you can be at the gate for the 7:30 opening, then move to Zhangzha if you're staying longer. The morning you save is worth more than the ¥200.

6. Self-booked vs group tour — the honest math

Let me price my three days properly, one person, mid-range, assuming two sharing a room. Trains: Chengdu return ¥260–302. Shuttles: rail station to gate and back, plus the Huanglong day, about ¥130. Park days: Jiuzhaigou ¥280 (one day is the right amount if you start at 7:30), Huanglong ¥250 with cable car. Two nights in Pengfeng split: ¥350–600 total. Food and incidentals: ¥150–250. The whole trip lands around ¥1,600–2,200 per person for 3 days in 2026 prices. Now the counter-offer: a multi-day group tour covering Chengdu–Jiuzhaigou–Huanglong runs ¥2,000–5,000 for essentially the same route. Is it worth it? Yes — for three specific kinds of traveller: first-timers in China who don't want to fight the real-name booking apps in Chinese; anyone who wants the driver and the timed-entry tickets handled so they never touch a queue; and travellers at altitude who'd rather not think about logistics while acclimatising. For everyone else, the self-booked version is genuinely easy now — the railway did that — and the gap between ¥1,600 and ¥2,000-plus is real money.

7. The 2026 budget, item by item

8. Season, crowds and the traps

Three traps, in order of how much they cost people. One: "fast-track" tickets sold at the gate. They are fake — the only fast track is the 7:30 start and a pre-booked real-name ticket. Two: underestimating the altitude and cold. The valley floor sits at 2,000–3,100 m and the passes higher; in late October mornings are near freezing, so pack the puffer jacket, gloves and lip balm, and treat the first day as acclimatisation. Three: planning Jiuzhaigou as a rushed same-day loop from Chengdu. The rail made it a day-trip in theory, and in theory it works — if you can handle a 1h40m train, a 2h shuttle, a full park day and a 2h shuttle back. I tried the relaxed version instead: train up the night before, sleep at the gate, full day in the park, Huanglong the next morning, train back. It costs one extra night and removes every single clock-watch. Do that one.

Bottom line

Jiuzhaigou in the last two weeks of October is the rare place where the postcards undersell it, and the 2026 numbers make it genuinely reachable: a ¥130–151 bullet train from Chengdu, a ¥51 official shuttle, ¥280 for a full park day, and ¥250 for Huanglong's terraces — around ¥1,600–2,200 for three days booked yourself, or ¥2,000–5,000 with everything handled on a group tour. The water really is that blue, the trees really do look on fire, and the ¥280 really is the only thing standing between you and it. Book the ticket, book the train, sleep at the gate, and go early.
