I Slept 500 km for ¥447: Beijing to Shanghai by Overnight Sleeper Train

The conductor knocked on our compartment door at 6:50 a.m. — "Shanghai Songjiang in forty minutes." I'd paid ¥447 for a middle berth, climbed into a bed at 7:19 the night before in Beijing, slept eight hours through the North China plain, and woke up 1,200 kilometres closer to the Bund with a whole hotel night saved. That's the case for China's overnight sleeper trains, and for most foreign travellers it's the single biggest money-and-time hack nobody talks about: the 4.5-hour bullet train costs more than the 12-hour bed, and the bed doesn't cost you a hotel room. Here are the 2026 prices, the real timetables, and exactly how to book a berth with nothing but a passport.

Hand-painted warm illustration of a green CR200J overnight sleeper train racing through the night, warm lit windows against a starry skyBook this →

1. Why a 12-hour train beats a 4.5-hour one

Run the numbers for one person, Beijing to Shanghai. A daytime G-series bullet train is ¥553–672 in second class and takes 4h18m to 6 hours. The overnight D-series sleeper is ¥447–562 for a hard (second-class) sleeper berth, ¥563–728 for a soft (first-class) sleeper. So the bed is cheaper than the seat — and it replaces a hotel night that would have run you ¥250–600 anywhere near the city centre. Leave at 19:10, arrive at 07:31, wash up on the train, drop your bag at the hotel and start the day. You lose roughly zero sightseeing time. On the flip side: you need to actually sleep on a moving train, the toilets are shared, and the 19:10 departure means your last Beijing day ends early. For families and budget travellers it's usually a clear win; for anyone who can't sleep in a rocking bed, the bullet train is worth the extra money.

2. What the train actually looks like: CR200J, the "green bullet"

These night trains run on the CR200J — the Fuxing-branded "green bullet" that China rolled out to replace old sleeper stock. A typical Beijing-Shanghai consist has 7 soft-sleeper cars (each with 10 lockable 4-berth compartments), 6 hard-sleeper cars (open bays of 6 berths, no door), a few second-class seat cars, and a dining car. Soft sleeper (一等卧): four berths in a room with a door you can lock, a table by the window, USB ports and reading lights at every berth, clean bedding. This is the one to book for privacy. Hard sleeper (二等卧): six open berths per bay — lower, middle and upper on each side, no door, shared corridor. The lower berth is the most comfortable and always sells out first; the middle is what I usually take; the upper is cheapest and has the least headroom. Washrooms and hot-water taps sit at the end of each car, and the dining car sells instant noodles, snacks and beer.

Hand-painted warm illustration of a soft sleeper compartment: four berths, white bedding, a window table with a thermos, warm reading lampsBook this →

3. The real timetables: Beijing to Shanghai, tonight

Five overnight D-trains run Beijing–Shanghai every day, all departing between 19:10 and 21:22 and arriving the next morning. Fares below are the October 2026 published prices per berth; they drift a little day to day as China's dynamic pricing adjusts (since May 2026 the second-class seat discounts on this route narrowed from 6.5–7折 to 8折, while sleeper berths keep their discount). Check the booking site for your exact date.

4. How to buy a ticket with only a passport

Two easy routes. Route 1 — Trip.com (what I use): the English site/app lets you search the exact train, pick a specific berth (lower is best), pay with a foreign card, and shows everything in English. They charge a small service fee (roughly ¥15–30 per booking) — worth it the first time. Route 2 — the official 12306 app: free, but the English interface is clunkier and foreign-card payments are inconsistent. If you use 12306, register with your passport exactly: surname first, all in capitals, last name before first name (e.g. SMITH JOHN), and the passport number typed precisely — mismatches block ticket pickup. Real-name verification can take a day or two, so register before you plan to buy. Tickets go on sale 15 days ahead at a set minute, and lower berths vanish fastest. Collect paper tickets at the station if you want, but your passport alone gets you through the gates — scan it at the automatic gate, same as Chinese ID holders.

Hand-painted warm illustration of a traveller holding a passport and train ticket inside Beijing South station's glass concourse under a departure boardBook this →

5. Kids on the sleeper: what children actually cost

Chinese children's rail fares are generous. A child under 6 travels free on a berth you've already paid for if they don't occupy their own berth (one free child per paying adult); 6 to under 14 pays half the base fare; 14 and over pays full fare. On sleepers, the child's discount applies to the base part of the fare, which works out to roughly 75% of the adult berth price in practice. A family of four can realistically share one 4-berth soft-sleeper room: two adults + two kids on the half-price berths, door locked, nobody bothered. If you're travelling with kids, book the soft sleeper room — the lockable door is worth every yuan of the difference.

Hand-painted warm illustration of a woman traveller by the window of a night sleeper, looking at her phone, tea steaming on the table, dark fields outsideBook this →

6. What to pack for the night train

The bedding is clean but thin, so: earplugs and a sleep mask (the corridor lights stay on, announcements echo at every stop), a light layer or travel blanket for the air-con, your phone charger and a power bank (USB ports exist on soft sleeper berths; hard sleeper cars have shared sockets in the corridor), slippers for the washroom run, a change of clothes and a toothbrush for the morning, and snacks and water — the dining car and trolley exist but prices are higher than a station shop. Lock your big luggage: bags that don't fit under your berth go on racks above the corridor, and keep your passport and valuables on your person. One more tip: buy your ticket for the lower berth whenever the price difference is under ¥100 — the middle and upper berths are a real test of core strength at 2 a.m. when you need the toilet.

Hand-painted warm illustration of the dining car: wooden tables, a steward pushing a trolley of noodles and snacks, farmland outside the windowBook this →

7. Sleeper vs bullet vs flight — the honest verdict

Same route, one person, October 2026. Day bullet train: ¥553–672, 4.5–6h, but you pay a hotel night at the other end. Overnight sleeper: ¥447–728 including your accommodation — cheapest total by ¥250–600, but you sleep on a train. Flight: roughly ¥600–1,200 for Beijing–Shanghai, plus airport transfers at both ends that eat 1–1.5 hours each; the sleeper wins on cost, loses on speed. If time is money and you sleep well anywhere, the bullet train is fine. If you're on a budget or want to convert travel time into a free hotel night — and honestly, if you've never done an overnight berth in China — take the sleeper at least once. It's a genuine travel experience, not a hardship: I've seen honeymooners in the soft sleeper with a bottle of wine and kids thrilled about the upper berth ladder.

8. Where else the sleeper runs: other night routes

Beijing–Shanghai is the famous one, but the same CR200J night trains connect other long pairs: Beijing–Chengdu, Beijing–Guiyang, Shanghai–Chengdu, Shanghai–Yibin, and Taiyuan–Shenzhen all run overnight sleepers, handy for turning a cross-country transfer into a free night. For the classic China loop — Beijing, Xi'an, Chengdu — you can chain sleepers instead of hotels and arrive each morning with a full day ahead. The 12306 app and Trip.com show which of your city pairs has a night train; search the route, filter by departure after 18:00, and look for the "sleeper" fare class. Note that sleeper services thin out in the low season on some secondary routes, so check the exact date before you plan around one.

Hand-painted warm illustration of morning arrival: the green sleeper train at Shanghai station, travellers with luggage stepping onto the platform in golden lightBook this →

Bottom line

The overnight sleeper is the best-value long-distance move in China: a berth that costs less than a bullet-train seat and replaces a hotel night. Book early for the lower berth, use Trip.com for the English experience, pack earplugs, and you'll roll into Shanghai — or Chengdu, or Shenzhen — at seven in the morning, rested and with a full day ahead. One night on a CR200J won't just save you money; it's the most memorable commute you'll have in China.
